And now, a few quotes from my trip through north Texas, every corner of Oklahoma and south-central Missouri.
On highway 65, somewhere between Warsaw and Springfield, MO: "Watter Melon for sale."
Also on highway 65: "Boondocks Nightclub."
Area around Claremore OK for miles: "Come see the Will Rogers Homestead!"
Speaking of Oklahoma, before every exit there is a big blue sign with lots of exclamation points the highlights the sights to see in each town. They start with "See Random Horrible Town!" and then proceed to list the things to do. For example, historic land rush area, charming small town, economic lodging. Literally, those are the highlights. It starts off funny, but after a few hours becomes sort of depressing. Then it gets funny again.
Through north Texas between the OK border and Dallas, 35, count 'em, 35 Texas flags. All of which are flying higher than the American flag. Classic.
